Getting ready for family photos does not have to mean overthinking every single detail.
I know it can feel like a lot. Outfits, snacks, shoes, hair, naps, weather, and at least one child who suddenly has very strong opinions about pants. But a good family session is not about everyone showing up perfectly polished. It is about giving your family the best chance to feel comfortable, prepared, and ready to be together.
This family photo session checklist will help you know what to do the week before, what to handle the day of, and what to bring so your session feels a little easier.

The week before your family photo session
The week before your session is the best time to handle the things that are easier to fix before the day gets busy.
Try on everyone’s outfits, including shoes. Make sure everything fits, feels comfortable, and allows your kids to move. If something is itchy, too tight, or constantly needs adjusting, it will probably bother them during the session too.
This is also a good time to think through haircuts, nails, undergarments, and any small details you do not want to deal with at the last minute. You do not need to go overboard. Just check the things that could cause stress if you discover them five minutes before leaving.
If you are working with me, this is also when we will already have talked through styling, location, and what to expect. You are not expected to figure it all out alone.

The day before your session
The day before your session, keep things simple.
Lay out everyone’s outfits in one place. Check shoes, socks, hair bows, jewelry, diapers, wipes, and anything else you need to bring. If your child has a favorite comfort item, set that aside too.
This is also a good time to pack your bag so you are not running around the house right before you leave. Family photos already come with enough moving parts. Future you will appreciate not having to search for the bug spray while someone is missing a shoe.
If your session is outdoors, I will keep an eye on weather and light. If anything needs to shift, we will talk through it.
What to bring to your family photo session
You do not need to bring your whole house, but a few practical things can make a big difference.
Bring water, easy snacks, wipes, bug spray, a brush or comb, and any baby or toddler essentials. If your child is still little, a backup outfit can be helpful too.
For snacks, choose something quick and not too messy. Think crackers, puffs, fruit snacks, or something small that will not stain clothes or take ten minutes to eat.
Comfortable shoes are also helpful, especially if we are walking through a field, trail, or outdoor location. You can always change into nicer shoes once we start if needed.
What not to worry about
You do not need to worry about your kids being perfect.
They may run. They may cling to you. They may need a snack, a break, or a minute to warm up. That does not mean the session is going badly. It means they are kids.
You also do not need to spend the whole session correcting every little thing. I will guide you when it helps and step back when it does not. Your job is not to manage every second. Your job is to love on your people and let the session unfold.
Some of the best family photos happen in the in-between moments when everyone stops trying so hard.

What I help with before your session
You are not expected to show up already knowing exactly what to wear, where to go, or how to make your kids cooperate.
Before your session, I help with planning, styling guidance, location suggestions, and what to expect. During the session, I guide your family with simple prompts, movement, and enough flexibility for real life.
If your child needs a break, we take one. If they are full of energy, we use it. If they are shy, we slow down.
Family photos should feel doable for the season your family is in.
