Choosing a photographer for your family can feel a little overwhelming. There are different photography styles, session options, pricing structures, and plenty of beautiful photos to scroll through.
But choosing the right photographer is about more than finding photos you like.
You are trusting someone to work with your kids, guide your family when you need it, and document relationships that matter to you. The experience matters just as much as what ends up in your gallery.
If you are comparing photographers around Macon or Middle Georgia, here are a few things worth looking at before you book.
1. Start With How You Want Your Photos to Feel
Before comparing prices or session options, spend some time looking at the kind of family photography you actually like.
Some photographers focus more on posed portraits with everyone looking at the camera. Others photograph more movement, interaction, and the smaller moments happening between family members.
Neither approach is necessarily better. It comes down to what feels like your family.
When you look through someone’s work, can you picture your own family in those photos?
If you love photographs of kids climbing into Mom’s lap, siblings being silly together, little hands reaching for Dad, and everyone interacting instead of constantly looking at the camera, look for a photographer who consistently shows those things.
Their portfolio should give you a pretty good idea of what they pay attention to when a family is in front of their camera.

Spend some time on the photographer’s website and blog. If they share full sessions or larger galleries, look through those too.
You want to see variety.
Are there photos of the whole family together? Parents with each child? Siblings? Movement? Close-up details? Quieter moments? A few everyone-looking-at-the-camera photos mixed in?
Also look at the children in their portfolio.
If you have a toddler who never stops moving, a shy five-year-old, or siblings with completely different personalities, it helps to see that the photographer regularly works with real kids being real kids.
3. Pay Attention to How They Work With Kids
This is one of the biggest things I would consider when choosing someone to photograph your family.
Kids do not suddenly become different people because family photos are scheduled.
A busy toddler will probably still be busy. Your shy child may need a little time before warming up. Someone might decide they are hungry five minutes after you arrive. A sibling may get annoyed. Someone may need Mom for a few minutes.
None of those things mean the session is going badly.
Look at how the photographer talks about children and family sessions. Do they expect kids to sit, smile, and follow directions for the entire session? Or does their approach leave room for movement, breaks, different personalities, and everything else that comes with photographing a family?
My own sessions are child-led for exactly this reason. We can walk, play, snuggle, take a break, or completely change what we are doing if something isn’t working.
Parents shouldn’t have to spend the whole session worrying about whether their kids are behaving well enough for photos.
4. Make Sure Their Work Is Consistent
It is easy to fall in love with one photograph.
What you really want to know is whether a photographer can produce work you love consistently.
Look through several sessions instead of stopping at the first few photos on the homepage.
Do skin tones look consistent? Do their indoor and outdoor photographs still feel like they came from the same photographer? Does their editing change dramatically from one session to another?
You should have a pretty good idea of what your own finished photos will look like before you book.
It is also worth asking yourself a simple question when looking at editing styles:
Do I actually love this, or do I just keep seeing it?
Photography trends change. Choose a style you genuinely enjoy looking at.
5. Think About What Kind of Session Fits Your Family
Not every family needs the same type of session.
A shorter outdoor session might work beautifully for a family wanting an updated set of photos without making an entire evening of it.
Another family may want more time because their children need a while to warm up, they want more variety, or they simply don’t want to feel rushed.
Location matters too.
You may love the idea of being outside somewhere your children can explore. Another family may feel more comfortable at home. An indoor rental studio can also be a good option depending on the time of year or the look you prefer.
Think about your children’s personalities, your family’s schedule, and what you want from your photos rather than automatically assuming one type of session is best.

Photography pricing can be confusing because photographers structure their services differently.
One session price might include digital images while another only covers the photographer’s time. Some photographers include a full gallery, while others let you choose a certain number of images afterward.

Once you book, what happens next?
Will the photographer help you choose a location? Do they offer clothing guidance? Can you ask questions about your kids or anything you are worried about? Will they tell you what time works best for the light?

Crowds matter too.
A location that works beautifully on a quiet weekday evening may be much busier on a Saturday in October.

Knowing the process beforehand means there are fewer surprises afterward.

Do you like their work?
Do you understand how their sessions work?
Does the way they talk about families sound like the experience you want?
Would you feel comfortable telling them that your child takes a while to warm up or that you’re worried about being awkward in photos?
And do you trust them when things don’t go exactly according to plan?
Because something probably won’t.
Your toddler might decide walking is much more interesting than standing with everyone. Someone might become completely fascinated by a stick. Your preschooler may decide they only want Mom for the next ten minutes.
That’s family life.
